VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

THRIFT STORE SUPPORT

  • Thrift store volunteer - work in all areas of daily store operations including waiting on customers, processing donations, and stocking merchandise.
  • Furniture moving - work with store personnel to pick up donations of furniture, appliances, etc.

DIRECT CLIENT SUPPORT

  • Shelter volunteer - volunteers provide support, crisis intervention, and transportation as needed to shelter clients.
  • Transportation - take clients to job interviews, social services, doctor's appointments, etc.
  • Furniture moving - work with shelter staff in transporting donated furniture, enabling shelter families to furnish new residences.
  • Child Support Group Care- assist clinical social workers with childcare during weekly support group meetings. Volunteers work on a rotating basis from 5:30 —7:00 pm, as needed.
  • Court advocate - advocates assist clients with filing for protective orders; accompany them to civil and criminal court; help them understand court proceedings, provide support and Crisis Intervention. 1 month commitment required, training provided.
  • Crisis Line Operator - responsible for answering the 24-hour CRISIS LINE after business hours, usually one night per month. Calls are forwarded to the volunteer's home for immediate victim response and coordinating victim services. 12-month commitment required, training provided.
  • Hospital Companions - provide the needed practical and emotional support for victims during their medical examination and first interviews with law enforcement. Companions provide information on agency services and resources as well as serve as the communication link the victim and hospital, law enforcement and family members during the medical procedures, and transport to shelter if needed. 12-month commitment required training provided.

Administrative

  • Office Support - office volunteer duties include general clerical assistance, copying, folding, mailers, brochures, and sorting literature. Duties are performed during regular business hours at the main office with a few special projects such as Night To Remember and other fundraisers after hours.

OTHER AREAS

  • Fundraising - participation through planning and execution of such fundraisers as Night to Remember, Neuse River Bridge Run, and the 5K Run For Shelter Race.
  • Speakers' Bureau - speakers assist during general public workshops, seminars, and community awareness presentations in providing information regarding domestic violence.
  • Shelter Enhancement — volunteers assist with shelter maintenance and repairs and involvement with property improvements.

Contributions

Because funding is limited and budget cuts are a regular issue, our continued services are dependant upon your contributions.

Financial donations can be made by check or money order and can be a designated gift such as "client assistance", "repair work at the safe house", "office supplies", etc. or it can be an unrestricted gift; meaning we use the money as we determine.

and household goods to our thrift store are gladly accepted.
